Thomas Smith and Chef George Patti both started in the restaurant business when they were teenagers. They first worked together in the Florida Keys about ten years ago. They opened a gastropub together in Tavernier, and a couple years later established their first M.E.A.T. Eatery & Tap Room in 2012, located in Islamorada. In 2014, they opened their second M.E.A.T. location in Boca Raton.
The goal of M.E.A.T. is to have a small, bartender run, high-quality, high-energy gastropub. Thomas and George wanted to offer an alternative to fast food and fast casual restaurants. Everything is made fresh in-house, including the bacon, sausages, salamis, ice cream, ketchup, mustard - literally everything is made fresh.
M.E.A.T. has a great creative beer selection, including industrial beers, local crafts and international beers. Thomas, being a sommelier, has handpicked several delicious organic and sustainably farmed wines. M.E.A.T. does not serve Coke or Pepsi products, only microbrewed sodas. Brewed in small batches, the majority of options do not use high fructose corn syrup.
In 2015, M.E.A.T. Eatery & Tap Room was named Number One Burger for their ‘Inside Out Juicy Lucy’; homemade pimento cheese and homemade bacon stuffed burger topped with American cheese, lettuce, and tomato. The year before, they were named Top Burger Restaurant in Florida - number five in the country on TripAdvisor. M.E.A.T. was recently filmed by Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives for an episode that will air in 2016!
The ‘Chicken Wings’ are immensely popular - being the only registered smokehouse in Boca Raton, M.E.A.T. Eatery & Tap Room smokes their wings and finishes them in a skillet with honey chipotle BBQ sauce and tops them with blue cheese crumbles. The ‘Pork Rinds’ are another must-try. They take the skins and soak them overnight, scrape them the next day, cut them, dehydrate them overnight, then toss them in a little bit of their special seasoning then they’re ready to enjoy; a three-day process!
